Victor Hlungwani Analysis: Controversial Corner Kick Which Led To A Penalty

The Soweto giants Orlando Pirates played 1-1 when they met rivals Mamelodi Sundowns this past weekend, but the goal has kicked up a storm due to some questionable decisions by the referee in charge Ndzandzeka.

In a hotly contested match between rivals, filled with robust tackles and chances at both ends Orlando Pirates were awarded a penalty in the second half when Sundowns defender Boutouil was judged to have fouled a Pirates player in the box.

The decision looked to be the correct one on replay, but former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has shed light on an earlier incident that gave Orlando Pirates an advantage in the first place.

The penalty decision was spot on, maybe with VAR the situation could have been different, but there was a problem with the corner kick that led to it," Hlungwani noted this incident in his post-match analysis.

Maswanganyi cheated by placing the ball outside the arc of the corner kick. The fourth official or assistant referee both failed to observe and inform the referee.

However, the incident went unnoticed by the referee and his assistants, Piates earned themselves a penalty which led to a goal.

"The corner should have been retaken, it was blatantly the wrong call," Hlungwani reiterated. "But because the officials missed it, the penalty still had to stand."

In that incident the kick should be retaken unfortunately the referee did not see Patrick Maswanganyi's corner

"The correct decision for the penalty but incorrect for the corner," said Victor.

The verdict by Victor is interesting because Percy Tau was fouled when Bafana Bafana played their match against Nigeria. Osimhen scored after

the incident however the VAR prioritised the incident before and gave the penalty to Bafana. One will wonder,r what could have happened if VAR had been in use.
